family history

Hill’s Dry Goods pays homage to James Hill, a respected leader in Vancouver’s retail industry and father to a third generation of Hill family retailers. The Hill family can trace their business roots to 1914 when Tom Reid opened Kerrisdale Dry Goods on 41st Avenue across the street from the current Hill’s of Kerrisdale store location. James Hill’s father, John Hill, purchased Tom Reid’s Marpole location in 1945. James worked with his father at Reid’s Dry Goods while pursuing his education and by the age of 23 James had taken the reins of running the family business.

In 1960 James and his brother Forbes, purchased

Kerrisdale Dry Goods and moved their business back to the original Kerrisdale location renaming their new store Hill’s of Kerrisdale

Brother and sister team Ross and Nancy Hill, have continued their father's success with Hill's of Kerrisdale by expanding the business to Blue Ruby Jewellery in 1998, Ray Rickburn Fine Men's Apparel in 2004 and most recently opening Hill’s Dry Goods in 2015. Hill’s of Kerrisdale remains a cornerstone in Vancouver’s retail landscape and is a destination across the lower mainland.
